National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

The National Professional Qualifications are accredited by the Department for Education and offered in conjunction with Ambition Institute.

National Professional Qualifications

  • Enhance and develop your existing skills and knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Improve your leadership confidence
  • Drive improvement within your school
  • Enable participants to access a network of leaders and benefit from peer experience
  • Provide carefully paced programmes across 12 and 18 months

If you are interested in training to deliver NPQs on behalf of the NWLTSH and Ambition Institute as a Visiting Fellow, please sign up via our form HERE. We especially welcome expressions of interest in delivering the new NPQ for SENDCOs, scheduled to begin in Autumn 2024.


Specialist Qualifications

  • NPQ Leading Teaching (NPQLT) - designed for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) - designed for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ Leading Behaviour and Culture (NPQLBC) - designed for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading behaviour and/or supporting pupil wellbeing in their school. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ in Leading Literacy (NPQLL) - this new, fully funded NPQ will help you learn the essential knowledge and skills to successfully lead high quality, literacy development and teaching in your school. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ in Leading Primary Mathematics - this new, fully funded NPQ, will support primary mathematics leaders in embedding mastery approaches to teaching maths, ensuring the subject is taught effectively in their schools. Leadership Qualifications

  • NPQ Senior Leader (NPQSL) - designed for school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ Headteacher (NPQH) - designed for school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school. For more information, please see here.
  • NPQ in Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) - this programme is designed specifically for leaders of early years education. Through evidence-based professional development, you’ll learn what great early years learning looks like and how to lead others and your setting. You’ll also look at what others can learn from you.   • NPQ in Executive Leadership - this NPQ will provide the specialist expertise required to run a multi-school organisation, helping participants develop processes and systems that enable and encourage collaboration between staff within and across schools while effectively managing resources and establishing sustainable policies.   • NPQ for special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) - this NPQ will become the mandatory qualification for SENCOs from September 2024.
